Ekol Yapi İnşaat LTDused horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to install a 36 inch steel natural gas pipe under several transportation corridors along the alignment of the pipeline. The project located in the Istanbul area involved two major highway crossings 487 m and 847 m in length, which are record HDD installations in Turkey. The crossings faced several challenges including difficult topography and soil conditions, and critical superstructure and infrastructure near the pipe corridor. The 487 m crossing presented geological challenges, which caused lose of returns and frac-outs. The contractor applied both traditional and forward reaming to open a 48” hole. The 36” pipe of approximately 230 tons was successfully pulled into the hole. The highest pulling force applied during the entire project was 55 tons. The 847 m crossing, which represents the longest HDD crossing in Turkey, passed under a major transportation corridor. Difficult soil conditions required use of a mud motor. The installation proceeded as planned. However, as with the 487 m installation, some difficulties associated with the geology were encountered. Both of these installations took place in crowded dynamic areas of Istanbul that limited available space to string the pipe. In spite of the many challenges, The Ekol Yapı HDD team, with the continuous support of Herrenknecht AG,successfully completed Turkey’s 2 longest HDD crossings.

Large Diameter Pipe Rehabilitation using CIPPin Zhezkazgan

One of two parallel pipelines for discharge cooling water from the turbines of the electric generators were rehabbed using the cured in place pipeline (CIPP) method. The steel pipelines diameters range from 1220 mm to 2220 mm.The different pipe diameters are connected with short taper sections. The pipelines operate both as a gravity sewer (half full) and a pressure line depending on the operation of the turbines. The pipes are more than 60 years old and lie partially under plant surface structures. The owner could not replace the leaky pipe using conventional dig-out and replace techniques for the sections located along the building and side connections. Rehabilitation of the pipe using CIPP was the preferred solution but presented major challenges: (1) the design and production of the liners had to be relatively lightweight and yet capable of standing the buckling loads during gravity operations and 2 bar working pressure loads during pressure operations; (2) the logistical complexities of transporting supplies and equipment from Western European countries to Bulgaria through and to Central Asian countries for installation; (3) the site’s physical restrictions, safety hazards and harsh weather; and (4) the weight and size of the liner material to be installed. The first liner proved particularly challenging to install. The inversion had to be done so that the liner taper fit exactly in the taper of the host pipe and conformed to the two elbows in the middle and end of the inversion. In addition, there was not enough space to open an exit shaft, so the inversion had to stop just short of an existing hatch. The liner was hot-water cured taking 72 hours of almost continuous efforts. After this inversion was completed, another liner was installed from the other end of the pipeline until it overlapped with the end of the first liner, the joint was sealed manually with glass matt and resin. The second liner required 48 hours to cure because of the huge volume of water required and a total of 96 hour to install.

Turbo – MICRO Satellite System/Sewer to Lateral Robot

IMS Robotics IMS Sewer to Lateral (STL) system rehabilitates household sewer connections without entering the property. The IMS STL system accesses the lateral or service connection from the main sewer line where it performs lateral rehabilitation - cutting, cleaning, and inspection. A unique feature of the STL system is that a cutting robot (IMSTurbo cutter) is easily coupled with a satellite system that is controlled by the TURBO panel and reel. The STL system positions the IMS Micro cutter at the lateral. The IMS Micro cutter is then inserted into the lateral by the satellite pushing unit where cutting, cleaning and re-opening of the lateral is performed. A system of cameras, track the positioning of the STL at the lateral and the insertion and subsequent rehabilitation of the lateral.

DICAT Trenchless HDD Edition

The Australian Drilling Industry Training Committee (ADITC) is a not-for-profit organization that promotes good training and learning practices in the drilling industry. ADITC developed the Drilling Industry Certification And Training course (DICAT) Trenchless HDD Edition in response to HDD industry request for training materials to assist both new and existing employees. The course is based on The Drilling Manual Fifth Edition - a practical and comprehensive reference the what, how and why of drilling. Its audience is both small and large drilling operations. DICAT is a technical training course available to people who work in the drilling industry that seek to expand their knowledge and understanding of horizontal directional drilling, microtunneling and auger boring. The course aims are to promote excellence in industry work practices, safety, and job-site environment. DICAT is structured as a distance learning (correspondence) course, which makes it readily available on-site use. The flexible structure of DICAT allows individuals to study at a time and pace best suited their situation. The flexible structure also allows employers to take advantage of down time to enhance employee job skills without interrupting the job. Each DICATT module includes comprehensive course assessments in “Test Yourself” sections. A completed assessment is sent to ADITC for review and certification. Assessments uses real-world work tasks that provide the user practical solutions to challenging field operations.
